Carbohydrates and Reducing Body Fat
Posted on June 28, 2011 | Healthy Nutrition.
I have decided to write this small article on losing body fat and carbohydrate consumption because many people including a lot of my clients get really confused about the whole issue. I will start by talking a little about carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are organic molecules that are classified according to their structure. There are two types, simple carbs are smaller, more easily processed molecules that are named things like mono and di-saccharides because they either contain 1 or 2 sugar molecules. Then there are polysaccharides also known as complex carbohydrates which have more than 1 sugar group linked together.
Simple and refined carbohydrates such as glucose, bagels, white bread, pasta, rice & baguettes are entered into our blood stream at a quick rate causing our blood sugar to rise dramatically. This can cause insulin resistance, a slump in energy levels and overall body fat storage. Complex unrefined carbohydrates include fruits & vegetables, wholegrain bread, oats, beans, lentils & legumes. These types of carbs contain more fibre which means that they will take longer to break down and enter the bloodstream thus causing a steady blood sugar level throughout the day. Without a doubt these are the best carbs to be consuming, especially vegetables & fruits. The only time it is beneficial to be consuming fast acting simple carbs is post workout when your metabolism is high and your body requires carbs to transport protein into the muscles to aid recovery and growth.
So, after the boring basics to carbs, what do I recommend?? For people wishing to reduce body fat I would recommend that all carbohydrates come from vegetables & fruits on around a 3:1 ratio (3 portions of veg to every 1 portion of fruit) If you are going to be consuming things like oats, cereals, breads, pastas & rice make sure that it is right after your workout when your metabolism is high and your body can deal with them better. If you are somebody who wants to gain a muscle and bulk up a little then just increase your carbohydrate consumption by 1 or 2 servings a day in the form of some complex carbohydrates and monitor your results.
