Top 10 Anti-Cancer Foods
Posted on May 12, 2011 | Healthy Nutrition.
There are many “miracle foods” from different parts of the world that claim to prevent or to actually curing cancer. How reliable are they? Are they available in my part of the world? Are they safe? There’s a range of herbal teas made from special leaves and roots. Some people claim drinking the juice of an exotic fruit is anti-cancer and anti other degenerative diseases. Some crush up the kernel of an apricot seed to consume. The Indians drink their own urine in what they call “shivambu therapy”. There are many top choices available. My objective in this article is to pick ten top anti-cancer foods that are readily accessible from your supermarket.
- Garlic and onions (and other members of the allium family) top the list of anti-cancer foods according to the US cancer institute. They are natural antibacterial, antiviral, antibiotic as well as a probiotic that eliminates toxins and heavy metals from the body. They contain quercetin and sulfur compounds that protect cells from free radical damage and inhibit tumours. They fight off unwanted fungus, viruses and bacteria in the body. Onion and garlic are great blood cleansers.
- Yoghurt and probiotics destroy bad bacteria and promote good bacteria in your digestive system. They are great for building your immune system.
- Berries contain valuable phytochemicals that contain antioxidants that prevent your body from oxidising (or rusting) on the inside. Each colour represent a differ phytochemical so it is best to eat a variety each week. These chemicals combine to counteract the nitrosamines in processed meats (cold cuts).
- Kiwifruit are very dense in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. They also help damaged cells regenerate and repair themselves so that cancer cannot form.
- Beans and legumes contain phytochemicals and fibre that absorb the unwanted toxins and free radicals. Then they remove them from the body.
- Soy products (like tofu, soy flakes and miso) contain isoflavones that inhibit tumour growth. Soy products have anti-carcinogenic properties – they mop up the fumes from chemicals and toxic metals that you absorb into your body.
- Cruciferous vegetables (dark green leafy vegetables like brocoli, kale cabbage, cauliflower and Chinese vegetables) contain compounds that protect cells from stress. They contain vitamins A, B, C and folate which work together to prevent cancer growth.
- Beetroot, purple sweet potato (and other purple root vegetables) contain powerful phytochemicals and fibre that eliminate and remove free radicals. These are also great blood cleansers.
- Nuts contain essential oils and nutrients that boost the immune system so that cancer cannot form.
- Fatty fish like salmon and mackerel contain omega-3 which prevent cancer cells from sticking together therefore tumours cannot form.
There are many more foods as well as herbs and spices that are anti-cancer, this list is no way exhaustive. Mainly alkaline foods is best for an anti-cancer diet. Tests have shown that cancerous cells cannot survive in an alkaline environment. Food derived from plant sources: berries, fruit, nuts, leaves and roots leave an alkaline or neutral ash as a byproduct. Even though some fruits are acid in its natural state, after they pass through the digestive system they leave an alkaline ash. When meat or animal products are digested an acidic ash is left in the blood.
